Happy December everyone! If you've been following my blog for a while you might remember this post. At the start of September, I shared some of the book releases I was excited for, and suddenly three months later, I am reviewing How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories by Holly Black. Fun fact, I actually pre-ordered this book twice. I forgot that I had bought the normal version already when I pre-ordered this Waterstones Exclusive Edition from the United Kingdom. Luckily, I could return the other one because the shipping costs to the Netherlands were very expensive.

So, How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories is not your average novel. It is an illustrated book that follows the story of Cardan from The Folk of the Air trilogy. The drawings in the novel are beautiful and this book is an addition to the series. One of my first posts on this blog was my review of the last book of this trilogy, The Queen of Nothing. The Folk of the Air series is a Young Adult Fantasy series that focuses on Jude. A human girl that is kidnapped to the world: Faerie. Throughout the series we see her struggling with power and powerlessness as she tries to fit in. Cardan is one of her classmates, but also a prince. This story has the enemies-to-lovers trope, so you might guess how the series ends. The Folk of the Air series has another additional novella that focusses on the twin sister of Jude, Taryn. I can also recommend that one!

I read this book in about 2/3 hours. It was nice to spend some time reading and looking at the drawings. The story was fun but short of course. I found it nice to spend some more time with Cardan because the trilogy focussed on Jude and they were often apart. Sometimes, I feel like Cardan is underrated because I actually quite like his character. It's just the tail that I could do without. Haahaha.

I really enjoyed the entire Folk of the Air series, with my favourite being either The Cruel Prince or The Wicked King, I can't decide. I wish we could read more of them, but the series ended in a fun and good way. It was nice to go back into their world again, it is so well created. Seeing Cardan experience human things like food and clothes was also really fun. It gave the world another dimension to see it through his eyes.

All in all, this is a short review. But honestly, if you've read (and enjoyed) this series, I don't want to spoil too much for you. It is a fun addition and especially the drawings were amazing! Have fun with this one!
