The Awakening by Nora Roberts - Review

I had never read a Nora Roberts novel before. But she is a well-known author with more than 200 books in her name. She is mostly known for her romance, but I was surprised and enthusiastic when I discovered she had just started an Adult Fantasy series, about Fey. Quite a fit for the theme on my blog this month: #FaeFebruary.

The start of The Awakening is set in our modern world, in Philadephia. The main character, Breen, has a toxic relationship with her mother, who pushed her into teaching (which she doesn't like to do), and makes Breen feel anxious and insecure about herself. However, she has the best friend in the world: Marco. Her gay best friend is the most positive and happy person you could meet, who wants the best for his friend. I love how he pushes her to be the best version of herself. The story begins with Breen quickly finding out that her mother had hidden away money send by her father. Who had left when she was a child and not returned since. Within a few hours, Breen discovers that she is a millionaire and quickly decides to quit her job and travel to Ireland.

In another world, Keegan receives the responsibility to protect the Fey of Talamh. He is a (HOT) warrior, who lost his father at a young age in a fight during their enemy. It takes a while for these two worlds to connect (through Breen). Breen is the one who might be able to destroy this enemy and save both of these worlds.

The novel is clearly divided into 3 acts, named: Changes, Discovery and Choice. As the title says, this first book is mostly about Breen discovering Talamh and her own heritage. For a large part of the novel, there's a little flirtation between Breen and Keegan. I suspected this to continue and 'climax' in a later sequel, but I was wrong. Roberts included a pretty explosive scene, which makes this novel more adult fiction than YA.

I might have developed a slight crush on Keegan during this read. And I cannot believe how underrated this novel is. I haven't seen it once on Bookstagram, which actually surprises me. The writing of Nora Roberts is very easy and has a nice flow. I read this novel as an e-book on my phone, which took me a while to get used to (as I don't read like that often), but once I got into the flow of things, I sped through the pages. Even though this wasn't a 5-star read for me (but a solid 4-stars), I still cannot wait to see how the story continues. I really liked the ending and the turn it took, I want to read more!

Like I said before, I can definitely recommend this novel, and I'm surprised I found it through Goodreads and not on Bookstagram. I cannot wait for the sequel, which will be published this November, so you can expect a post about that novel then!

With love,

Julia
