A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas - Review

A Court of Thorns and Roses. I've talked about the book, the series, a lot already, but never an official review. Mostly because I have read the books before I started this blog and it had been too long for me to review them. However, because A Court of Silver Flames will be published this month, I decided to reread the entire series! Which means that this is the third time that I've read this first book and the second time for the rest of the series. So, here we are reviewing ACOTAR by Sarah J. Maas. Be aware, this review might be slightly biased because I just love these books!

ACOTAR is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, the main character is Feyre, the youngest daughter of a failed merchant. Together with her father and her two sisters, they live in a cabin in a village near the border to the Faerie lands. Raised in fear for faeries, out of necessity Feyre still hunts in the woods for food despite the danger. When she kills a disguised faerie, out of hatred, the adventure begins. She is taken away to the Spring Court for the life she took.

These books were first published as YA but later rebranded to NA, which was a good choice. The romance and some specific scenes might be a little too detailed for younger readers.

Even though I now know this book from the top of my head, rereading this let me realise how many details I forgot. Besides, I now understood hints towards the later books in the series, which was fun! For new readers, the first chapters might be a bit slow-paced, but I promise you, it will only get better. Literally even after the book. As a reader, you are kept as unknowing as Feyre, which is why some things take time before you will understand what is happening.

This book, this series, are books I wish I had written myself, they are that good. How Maas created these fey, their world and the powers. I love it!  Feyre is a strong character, I love her personality. Even when injured she can snap your ears off. Even though it is a retelling, it is such an original story. Maas brought retellings to an entirely new level and I'm just in awe. This book reminded me why I like to read (especially fantasy), as a reader you are able to experience these adventures and I just love that so much.

Maas is so good at writing romance. I don't know how she does it, but she can create these HOT scenes and will get you blushing. Personally, I was all team Tamlin when I finished the book and did found the ending of this book to be good enough. But how wrong I was. The second book is even better and it took me an entire year to realise this. Don't make the same mistake as I did (READ THE SECOND BOOK).

Just a heads up, however, in these books you can come across some cruel characters or actions. If you're sensitive to abuse, violence or sex scenes, you might want to skip the books. Most of the negative reviews do discuss these points, personally, I did not have a problem with this, but it might be a problem for you. Consider this before reading!

My goal is to make my sister read these books and I hope she will enjoy them as much as I did. I will be posting my reviews of the second and third book of the series this month too, with spoilers though so you better read this book first! Not too long ago I bought the entire set of another series of Sarah J. Maas: Throne of Glass. I will probably not read them this month, but look forward to reviews of those books too!

With love,

Julia
