A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas - Review

This might be my most anticipated novel of 2021. There are a few close follow-ups though, but I've been so excited for this book to come out, that I cannot believe I'm finally writing this review. While its publication was on Tuesday the 16th, I received my copy on Thursday. I hadn't planned much for the weekend, so I spent a lot of time reading. Which meant that I finished the book in two days. Oops.

Because many are still waiting for their copy to arrive (or rereading the entire series), I made sure not to include spoilers in this post. Once I think that it is okay to talk about all the juice, I think I will talk about this on Instagram

On Goodreads, I gave this book 5 stars and the following review:
This might be the "smuttiest" book I've ever read. But I think it says enough that I read, no devoured, this book in 2 days and was left in tears. This story and these characters have a special place in my heart and I loved every single page of this novel. I can definitely recommend!
If you thought that other SJM books contained a lot of hot scenes, get ready for this book. As expected, this book is all about Cassian and Nesta. From my rereads of Feyre's story, I picked up a lot of hints to this book. And I was so ready for it! I remember that during my first read, I did not like Nesta at all, but that has changed over the course of my rereading process, as well as during this book. Maas focusses a lot on mental health and gives Nesta's trauma a new perspective.

From Feyre's perspective, Nesta always has been a cold and distant person. The oldest of the sisters and probably the one that felt most affected when the family lost their money. Nesta had grown up and got accustomed to the ways of behaving in such a high-class society, while Feyre, who was younger, could more easily shift in roles. Not to say that things were easy for Feyre, but besides the loss of their money and home, Nesta gained a lot of anger towards her father. Even from Feyre's perspective, we see Nesta struggle with this.

When Nesta stole power from the Cauldron and was turned to High Fae, her personality became even stronger and distant. Together with trauma from the war, Nesta found herself lost and incapable of loving herself and others. In A Court of Frost and Starlight, we already got a glimpse into the bad situation Nesta found herself in.

However, we do also see Cassian's perspective in ACOSF, Cassian, who, since the visit to Feyre's sisters, has been in awe of Nesta. While the reason for his feelings towards her was not clearly stated before, the sentence "Because I can't stay away", which he admits to Feyre in I think ACOWAR, does suggest a lot.

Cassian, who after 500 years, still remembers most of the people he killed, seems like the perfect person to help Nesta with her trauma. And so he does.

I liked the fact that we finally see Feyre and Rhysand from a different side. Through the eyes of Nesta, we understand how she doesn't like them and struggles to find her place in their court. Cassian has more respect for his brother and his mate, yet sometimes feels a tang of jealousy, since they have what he wants so badly. Even this bad-ass war hero wants some love. And oh he gets it. During the book, he and Nesta play with each other's feelings and their own. Finding out how they fit together, if at all. Their romance becomes a game.

There's a lot of sex and sexual actions in this novel, so please be aware of that before reading. I really enjoyed it, but if for whatever reason you do not want that, you might want to consider not reading this novel. ACOSF definitely stands above ACOMAF in the number of HOT scenes there are. Maas did say that Cresent City #2 might challenge ACOSF in smuttiness, so I'm already ready for that book. Hihi.

After reading this book, I'm so ready for Elain's story. I hope that Maas will be writing a novel about her too.

I hope that you enjoyed this review, there's probably a lot that I forgot to mention. But I'm sure I will talk even more about this book in the (nearish) future! Thank you for reading, see you in the next one!

With love,

Julia
