The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

Happy birthday to my sister! And happy publishing day to Julie Kagawa! Today, Julie Kagawa published her newest novel The Iron Raven. I recently bought the special editions of the Iron fey series (I've only received The Iron King yet). While I'm waiting until the matching paperback edition of the Iron Raven is published, I still wanted to talk about the Iron Fey series, to get into the mood today. As I have said in earlier posts, The Iron Fey, or better yet, The Iron King, was a book that got me back into reading as a teenager. After primary school, I stopped reading as much because I put my priorities elsewhere. Yet, my subscription by the library still continued and that was where I picked up the Iron King. Now mind you, this was in 2014/2015 I think, so I was still quite young and I read these books in Dutch. I still remember being in love with these books.

These books were the first books with fey that I read. I have read fantasy before, but I didn't know about fae and faeries (being tropes) yet. These books made me fall in love with fae and until I read ACOTAR by Sarah J. Maas, these were my favourite fae books. Last year, I decided to reread the Iron Fey series (with novellas) in English. I bought the books as ebooks and sped through them. I stopped after reading The Iron Knight. The series continues with Keiran and Ethan in another trilogy, but I haven't read those books yet.

Even though Ash was my first book-crush. I really liked Puck as a character, so I will definitely read his book once I have it! I'm still interested in reading Ethan and Keiran's part of the story, so those books are also still on my tbr.

Inspired by William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Julie Kagawa took his characters Mab, Oberon and Puck and made it into her own YA fantasy story. The main character in the first 3 books is Megan Chase, a young teenage girl that lives an 'ordinary' life until her brother is stolen away and replaced by a changeling. Megan will do everything it takes to get her brother back. During her adventure, she finds out that she is the daughter of King Oberon and half-fae, and falls in love with Ash, a son of Queen Mab.

These books are very easy and fun to read. Even though they are for a younger audience, it is a fun story that takes you away into this fantasy world. Yet, by making Megan an ordinary teenager, it was very relatable to me when I read it for the first time. During my read last year, I realised how young and naive Megan is as a character. It's the age difference now between me and the main character what made me realise this. Still, this is a wonderful series and a fun read! I can recommend this to readers of any age (above 14ish) because Kagawa's writing is just so fun!

Since I read the books last year, I will not go into much detail. But I hope you liked this reviewish post nevertheless. See you soon!

With love,

Julia
